The question of the origin and formation of the concluding chapter of Joshua has been extensively discussed, two primary difficulties being addressed — the unique historical description and the disparity between the consistent account that creates the impression of a sequential text and the lack of unity revealed between the lines. This article seeks to resolve these issues by suggesting that the chapter reflects two strata, identifiable via a collation of the elements matching the features of the Patriarchal and the Pentateuchal traditions respectively. The earlier stratum, composed as a continuation, and perhaps conclusion, of the patriarchal tradition, forms the foundation for the later stratum, written during the Restoration period, perhaps in order to appeal to the Samaritans. The advantage of this analysis lies in its demonstration of the validity of employing the Traditio-Historical Hypothesis as an alternative to the Documentary Hypothesis.
